"Don't Breath Poisons 8 Hours a Day (Or More)"

Sleep On Natural Bedding

My daughter sleeps, on average, 12 hours a day (including naps). That's 12 hours with her face directly on top of a pillow, sheet, mattress cover, and mattress—breathing whatever toxic fumes are "out gassing" from those items, such as water/stain repellants and flame retardants including:

  • asbestos
  • aluminium hydroxide
  • magnesium hydroxide
  • antimony trioxide
  • borons such as boric acid
  • tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salts (made by passing phosphine gas through a solution of formaldehyde and a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid)
  • polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
  • polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs)
  • hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)

The purpose of treating mattresses (including crib mattresses) with flame retardants is to save the lives of approximately 300 smokers a year, who fall asleep in bed with a lighted cigarette.

Now, the last time I checked, my baby doesn't even know what a cigarette is...much less how to light and smoke it in her toddler bed. (JLOL) So, personally, I'm more concerned with her inhaling poisonous chemicals EVERY DAY for 12 hours a day, than I am with her bed catching on fire.

Of course, when I first found out about all the chemicals in our bedding, I couldn't afford to buy all new stuff. So I started with the mattresses (the worst toxic perpetrators) and gradually added organic sheets, pillows, and comforters, etc.—as I could afford them.

Tip: I only bought twin-sized linens for my infant daughter, and dealt with them being oversized for the crib by tucking them under the mattress. That way, I didn't waste money on stuff that she would soon outgrow.

Now everyone in my family sleeps on all-natural latex mattresses covered in all organic and wool bedding. I use a washable, wool mattress cover to protect my daughter's mattress from tee-tee.

Good to know: Wool is a natural fire, water, and dust mite repellant.

And her bed is made of hardwoods...not pressed board that is permeated with formaldehyde (which off-gasses the most the first year, but up to ten years or more).

The organic wool and cotton comforters and pillows have to be aired outside every few months (the wool is not washable), but that's a small price to pay for the wonderful peace-of-mind I have knowing that my daughter bed is not poisoning her 12 hours a day as she sleeps. She sleeps well, therefore I sleep great!
